The Kennel

Kennel Name

Every kennel name has a story, and ours began quite literally by accident. While travelling from the UK to France on the Eurostar with my Saarloos Wolfdog, Anouk, my car decided to break down — less than ideal when there are about 60 cars stuck behind you! A kind French mechanic came to the rescue and quickly noticed Anouk sitting in the back seat. He instantly fell in love with her, affectionately calling her “grosses oreilles” (“big ears”). The nickname stuck, and from that moment, the idea for my kennel name was born. Anouk herself has always been known for her ears. Friends and colleagues often joke about seeing nothing but her ears poking over the edge of my desk during video calls. And anyone familiar with Saarloos Wolfdogs knows they go through a wonderfully awkward “big ear” phase as they grow (ear-resistably cute!) — another reason the name felt just right. So, “Grosses Oreilles” isn’t just a name — it’s a tribute to Anouk, to the quirks of the Saarloos, and to the kind stranger who turned a stressful day into the start of our story.

Breeding

I breed Saarloos Wolfdogs according to the guidelines of the DVSWH (Deutscher Verein für Saarlooswolfhunde), of which I am currently a board member, and in accordance with VDH/FCI standards. My breeding program focuses on health, temperament, and responsible practices to give every puppy the best start in life.

Puppy Care & Socialisation

My puppies are raised in my home environment, growing up as part of the family. Each puppy will leave me fully cared for, including:

Vaccinations and deworming
Microchipping
Pet passport
DNA parentage verification
Genetic testing for DM, Pituitary Dwarfism, and PCYT2
Blood samples contributed to ongoing Saarloos Wolfdog research (link)

Raising puppies in my living room allows them to experience everyday sights, sounds, and interactions from an early age, helping them develop into confident, balanced dogs ready for their forever homes.

My Wild Heart Turned Loyal Companion

Saarloos Wolfdogs are true surprise packages — you never quite know what you’ll get. In her younger years, Anouk seemed determined to check every box that gives this breed its “challenging” reputation. She was strong-willed beyond belief, endlessly resourceful, and had a remarkable talent for getting her own way. When stressed, she could be quite destructive; house training took what felt like an eternity, and car rides were a complete no-go. People told me that the first two years would be the hardest — which turned out to be an understatement. It took easily twice that before things started to calm down a little. Those early puppy months are mostly a blur (nothing about wolfdog puppyhood is “cute” in the traditional sense!), but Anouk has come a very long way since then. Today, she’s grown into a calm, loyal, and still delightfully mischievous companion. She’ll never love the car, but she copes with it. She’s learned to stay home alone for a few hours and has adjusted remarkably well to city life — no small feat for a Saarloos. She’s handled several moves, the noise and bustle of urban living, and even joins me for concerts and sightseeing trips: Busy places still aren’t her favorite, and a few sworn enemies remain (umbrellas are definitely not on her friend list), but overall, she’s become a confident city explorer. Still, she’s happiest on long hikes, scrambling up rocks to look down on us mere mortals. Winter is her favorite season — nothing makes her happier than bounding through fresh snow. In restaurants, Anouk is the picture of calm as long as she can curl up under the table. She’s very pack-oriented and loves group walks with people and dogs she knows, making sure everyone stays together — and if someone lags behind, she’ll “just happen” to find something fascinating to sniff until they catch up. Her memory for both dogs and humans is extraordinary, and her joy when old friends come to visit is pure magic. She enjoys activities like mantrailing and dummy searches, loves playing with her dog friends, and of course, cuddles. Her prey drive is manageable, so she can often enjoy hikes off-leash when it’s not too busy. She has even joined me at the office and is calm and easy-going whether I’m working there or from home. Anouk has grown into a mature, balanced dog — still full of character, but now grounded and steady. She’ll always have that independent Saarloos spirit, but with time, patience, and understanding, she’s become a wonderful, devoted companion who continues to make me proud every day.

We have a puppy toilet with artificial grass in and outside of the litter box and some of the puppies are starting to make use of it. :) The teeth are also starting to come in!

Aaryn-Silas, Afini and Aglaé have opened their eyes. Áskil followed 3 days later. All are reacting to sounds now.

Anouk took her sweet time and drove me a bit crazy, but 27 hours after the temperature drop (caused by sinking progesterone levels) she finally went into labour and gave birth to the first puppy, a boy, 3 hours later. Alternating between female and male we were able to greet 4 more puppies. Sadly the last male didn't make it, but we are overjoyed about the other four little ones:

We are still going for walks and even did a short trail, the temperaure is stable, but she has now reduced her food intake. The movement of puppies is visible even with the naked eye.

I can now feel the puppies moving. :) We are still going for our daily walks, but they are much shorter than usual and Anouk is resting for most of the day. She is still eating well and her temperature is stable.
